Project Title:
Modernity and De-colonial Thought in Egypt: From Taha Hussein to Abdelwahab Elmessiri
Project Abstract:

This book project explores marginalized narratives in Egyptian de-colonial thought. It attempts to deconstruct Eurocentric narratives that tie the future of Egypt to European culture. Focusing on Egyptian scholars who travelled to France, the United States, Hungary and Germany, the book shows how the premises of modernity are negotiated in religious studies, literature, philosophy and social theory. The book is divided into seven chapters. The first chapter approaches the ways in which the colonial narrative is reproduced by Taha Hussein’s advocation of the liberal European worldview in all areas of life. The second chapter juxtaposes the liberal narrative with Sayyid Qutb’s Islamic narrative. The third and fourth chapters uncover the attempts to Egyptianize Marxist narratives. The fifth and sixth chapters assess the relevance of Islamic traditions to collective action and individual change. The last chapter traces the features of a new Islamic discourse and its entanglement with Western self-scrutiny discourse.
