The CEU Institute for Advanced Study jointly with the Department of Sociology and Social Anthropology and the Department of Political Science is pleased to announce a workshop on Financialization to be hosted by the Central European University on Friday, March 20.

The deregulation of national and regional markets and their integration into a global financial market, empowered in its quest for investment sources and opportunities, have turned the world we live in into a financialized world. Corporate as well as civic institutions of all kinds are reshaped by the pressure to be profitable. Workers and savers, in turn, are reconstituted as private debtors and investors who must manage financial risk. This workshop is an opportunity to make sense of the social and political implications of financialization in cross-disciplinary fashion, with the help of scholars at the forefront of this research. They are:

Don Kalb, of Central European University’s Department of Sociology and Anthropology

Paul Langley, of Durham University’s Department of Geography,

Susanne Soederberg, of Queen’s University’s Department of Political Studies

Dimitris Sotiropoulos, of The Open University’s Business School

About two weeks prior to the workshop, each of them will pre-circulate among the registered workshop participants a paper on financialization as perceived through the lens of their own expertise. The workshop will comprise of four sessions in which the participants will all sit around a table and discuss with each of them, and with each other, the finer points of these papers and their larger ramifications. A formal respondent will kick off each discussion. All of the invited scholars and participants will participate in all of the sessions, which will build on and speak to each other.

The workshop will take place on the Central European University main campus on Friday, March 20, over an entire day (roughly 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.) and will include opportunities for informal discussion over coffee- and lunch breaks.

Open only to pre-registered participants. For all enquiries, please contact Hadas Weiss (hadaspweiss@gmail.com) Visiting Fellow at CEU IAS.
