Panel discussion with IAS Junior Core Fellow Dieter Reinisch
IAS CEU invites you to attend the panel discussion with IAS Junior Core Fellow Dieter Reinisch, Christina Griessler and Thomas Fetzer (CEU) on the topic 'Nationalism and Populism in Post-Brexit Europe' organized by Andrássy Universität Budapest, Institute for Advanced Study, CEU and Osztrák Kulturális Fórum - Österreichisches Kulturforum Budapest.
The panel discussion will take place on Wednesday, 25. March 2020, 18:00-20:00 at Österreich-Bibliothek György Sebestyén, 1088 Budapest, Pollack Mihály tér 3.
Brexit: the cause or the result of the rising populism and nationalism in Europe? What consequences are there for Ireland and the EU?
Brexit not solely led to a debate on the future of the European Union, but also a renewed rise of nationalist tendencies in England, Ireland, and Scotland. While English nationalists celebrate the independence from the EU, the Scottish National Party demands a partition from the United Kingdom to bring an independent Scotland back into the EU. In Ireland, calls for unification accelerated on both sides of the border.
The nationalisms in Ireland and Scotland emerge from diverging historical roots and causes than the nationalisms and populisms in England and Central-Eastern Europe. All these phenomena, nonetheless, challenge the EU and her future in similar ways.
At this panel discussion, Dieter Reinisch will introduce the current wave of nationalism and populism in Ireland and Scotland; Christina Griessler will discuss the future of Ireland in a Post-Brexit EU; and Thomas Fetzer will conclude on nationalisms and populisms in Europe and the consequences of Brexit on Europe. This is followed by an open discussion with the audience.
The event is organised on the occasion of the publication of the German book by Liam Ó Ruairc Nordirland zwischen Krieg und Frieden (Wien: Promedia 2020“, translator: Melanie Sindelar), edited by Dieter Reinisch.
The language of the event is German (no subtitles).
