The proposed project is part of a broader research agenda to reassess socialist economic development in Eastern Europe between 1950 and 1989. The prospective research output includes several articles targeting leading international journals in economic history and book chapters in preparation for edited volumes forthcoming at top international publishers. In my current collaboration with Dr Alex Klein (University of Kent), we present revised growth accounts for three Central European economies: Czechoslovakia, Hungary and Poland. We propose to extend our analysis by constructing industry-level accounts with revised data on value added and both capital and labour input in manufacturing, adjusted for capital structure and labour quality. The resulting dataset will be the first of its kind for the Visegrad countries in the period before 1990. In addition, the disaggregate data will facilitate sophisticated quantitative analysis into the different sources of productivity growth in socialist industry.
