The recent proliferation of research in the area of migration has not substantially tackled migrants’ positionalities towards different social protection forms and stakeholders, and the attention to the developing countries of origin has been low. My research project aims to fill in this gap by investigating the impact that access to formal and informal social protection has in the nexus of migration, return and re-migration among Albanian migrants. To this purpose, I will employ an interdisciplinary approach to develop a comprehensive analytical framework to guide a qualitative research design where primary data will be collected to develop case stories of migrants. Combining systematic literature review in the area, the analysis of available secondary data, and that of the primary qualitative data will help gain the necessary depth in understanding the role of access to formal and informal social protection as pull/push factors for migration and provide recommendation for policymaking and future research.
