Project Title:
Peaceful Return of Victims of Forced Displacement in Eastern Europe and Middle East
Project Abstract:
The project will examine how victims of displacement choose to return home under conditions that seem prohibitive but without reigniting past conflict. It will investigate the role of economic, psychological and security-related factors commonly identified in the literature on voluntary return, as well as novel ones emphasizing social capital and institutional design. The project focuses on five cases of displacement: Bosnia, Cyprus, Iraq, Syria, and Turkey. The findings will contribute to the relevant literatures in anthropology, international development studies, psychology, political science, and sociology, as well as to current policy debates.
