My proposed project on Ukrainian reading, Ukrainian readers, and their literature is intended to fill an obvious and significant gap in our understanding of the intellectual and communicative trends in modern societies: the figure of the “Reader,” based on the pluralistic evolution of cultural consumption and literary self-reflection. The main objective of the project is to reveal the peculiarity and special importance of the problematics of "reader/ public/audience" for modern Ukrainian literature and culture in a comparative context. First, this subject has been very acute for newUkrainian literature since its birth in the beginning of the 19th century; second, it became a subject of special theoretical studies in Ukrainian literary studies as early as the 1920s, earlier than in many other countries.
