Stalin’s Peacemaker: Ilya Ehrenburg and the World Peace Council, 1948-1957
Project Abstract:
A study of the role of Ilya Ehrenburg in the communist peace movement from its inception at the Wroclaw peace congress in 1948 to the aftermath of the 1956 Hungarian crisis. Through Russian/Soviet archives the research explores Ehrenburg’s influence on the direction of the peace movement, his role in mediating Moscow’s demands on the movement, and his activities as a lobbyist in the Kremlin for a broad-based, diverse and independent peace campaign.
