The poverty situation in Nigeria is worrisome. In 2016, the Federal government of Nigeria established the National Social Investments Program (NSIP), including the Conditional Cash Transfer (CCT) to tackle poverty across the country and prevent vulnerable households from falling further down the poverty line. The CCT program targets the poorest of the poor by giving 5,000 Naira (N5000) monthly to “poor” households in selected States/Communities. Main questions to be addressed in this research project are: what is the efficacy of this conditional cash transfer as a poverty reduction strategy in Nigeria, and to what extent has this social investment program considered “gendered poverty” in its coverage?
