Project Title:
Records (re)claimed: found footage, memory and ideology in Eastern European documentary film
Project Abstract:

The research project will study the compilation documentaries of Sergei Loznitsa, Péter Forgács, Andrei Ujica, Vitaly Manski, and others, to determine the ways in which either the historical context or authorial intervention creates inferences and new meanings from the association of found footage. Grounding itself in film studies, memory studies, twentieth century history and cultural studies, the aim of this research project is to understand whether images have intrinsic ideological value or whether meaning is constructed and derived from the context they are situated in. This research project will address the ways in which documentary film(maker)s create new meanings from found footage material, creating discourses on not only the way connotations can be drawn from association of images and sounds – an approach that has been in evidence since the Soviet montage experiments in the 1920s – but also about the impermanence of memory in the face of historical changes.
