Project Title:
Contemporary Ukrainian War Poetry
Project Abstract:

The conflict in the East of Ukraine has led to the emergence of a powerful new Ukrainian poetry. This poetry presents a condensed and compelling mode of story-telling, capturing the immediacy and the urgency of the deeply individual and personally felt war-time experiences. My book manuscript examines how this new poetry attempts to make sense of an impossible predicament of invasion, dislocation, and violent conflict, while registering the barely perceptible shifts in language and narrative. In addition to closely examining the poetry itself, the book will also feature interviews with poets, authors, and scholars reflecting on the poetry as an alternative to ideological discourse and considering its potential to encourage reconciliation.
